Singapore Watercolour Society

President's Message

This year marks a new milestone in the history of the Singapore Watercolour Society as she celebrates her 40th Anniversary.

From a humble beginning of only 13 founder-members in 1969, this small group has grown from strength to strength into one of the most prominent and respectable organisations in Singapore. Today, 4 of them are still with the Society, namely Mr Ho Yee Ping, Mr Khor Ean Ghee, Mr Loy Chye Chuan and Mr Lee Choon Kee.

Building on the foundation of the old founders, the Society continued with the rich tradition of weekly indoor and outdoor paintings and annual exhibitions. This gradual and time-tested process have nurtured many young and enterprising artists who have made the grade not only locally, but also in the international arena. Of special mention are our Honorary President Mr Ong Kim Seng, Founder-Member Mr Loy Chye Chuan, ex-President Mr Seah Kam Chuan, renown artists Mr Tong Chin Sye, Ms Adelene Tan Ah Chiew, US Fine Art Masters graduate Mr Ng Woon Lam , our current Vice-President Mr Marvin Chew and vice secretary general Ms Anne Lim.

Today the Society continues to renew itself through recruitment of fresh blood into its ranks and files. All eligible candidates from the public are encouraged to join the Society if they meet the stringent criteria set forth by our panel of 5 judges. Unsuccessful candidates will not be turned away as there is a follow-up program in place to help them. Last year saw 5 new members joining the Society and of these, 2 are Malays. Our all encompassing multi-racial policy sieves out good and potential artists to join the organisation based solely on merit, regardless of their socio-economical, racial or religious backgrounds. As at end of 2008, we have 101 members on our list.

I am very honoured to be elected to fill the shoes of Dr Michael Lim. He has performed well as President during the previous term, and I hope to build on his strength and to lift the Society to greater heights and glory.

Seah Kang Chui
President
